There has been a project to improve accessibility at Totton railway station as disabled passengers travelling from Southampton towards the New Forest and Bournemouth, and needing to get off the train at Totton, had to continue to Brockenhurst to then return in the opposite direction to be able to get off as there was no disabled access on the other platform.
The project was a partnership between Totton Town Council, Hampshire County Council, South Western Railway, and Network Rail, with additional support from the Department for Transport’s Access for All fund, and involved creating a level path from the south platform to the High Street.
Now complete, the Saints Disabled Supporters’ Association were invited to be part of the opening ceremony on 15th August 2024, with the ribbon being cut by Councillor Lulu Bowerman the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and SDSA Chair, Andy Mather. Other SDSA committee members were also there to check out the new path.
SDSA Chair, Andy Mather, said that “the new path will help Saints supporters returning from a game, as well as parents returning from Southampton (and beyond) with prams”.

After the opening, we discussed with Totton Town Councillor Neville Penman, possible improvements to pavements and roads to make Totton more accessible for disabled people using the new path.
Improvements suggested included more/better drop kerbs, pavement resurfacing, and the addition of disabled parking bays in the nearby car park.
